Throughout her exemplary career, two-time James Beard award winner Toni Tipton-Martin has built a reputation as a champion of Black culinary stories, and her library of rare, original Black cookbooks is legendary. She expertly relates the historical and cultural context of the recipes she presents from these texts and continues the work of rediscovery with her latest book, Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs, and Juice. This collection of cocktails spotlights the creativity, hospitality, and excellence of Black drinking culture, with classic and modern recipes inspired by formulas found in two centuries’ worth of Black cookbooks. Platform is honored to welcome Toni Tipton-Martin for a conversation with James Beard Foundation vice president of Community, Colleen Vincent.

About Toni Tipton Martin:  
Toni Tipton-Martin is a culinary journalist, a community activist, the editor-in-chief of Cook’s Country magazine, and the author of two James Beard Award–winning cookbooks, The Jemima Code and Jubilee. She received the International Association of Culinary Professional’s Trailblazer Award, its Book of the Year Award, and the prestigious Julia Child Award, an honor given to an individual (or team) who has made a profound and significant difference in the way America cooks, eats, and drinks. Her collection of more than 450 African American cookbooks has been exhibited at the James Beard House, and she has twice been invited to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s programs to raise a healthier generation of kids. She is a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Foodways Texas. 

About Colleen Vincent: 
Colleen Vincent, the vice president of Community for the James Beard Foundation, is a vocal champion for diverse leadership in all sectors of the hospitality industry. She is also the cofounder of Black Food Folks, an influential fellowship of Black excellence in food and drink and executive producer of Black Desserts. She has been featured on panels at the Food Book Fair, the Minority Chef Summit, and represented the Foundation on the High Road Restaurant Roundtable. She has appeared on numerous podcasts and publications and has curated and consulted a wide variety of roundtables and workshops.
She is a founding advisory committee member for Women in Hospitality United. She sat on the James Beard Foundation Food Conference steering committee and is currently a part of the House Event Programming Committee. In 2019, Colleen was named a Trailblazer on Dine Diaspora’s 31 Black Women in Food list and was named as a Person to Watch by Imbibe Magazine in 2021. She was recently honored with a Women in Wine nod from the Hue Society and received the 2021 Gumbo Jubilee Award recognizing her work highlighting foodways of the Diaspora. A Brooklyn native, Colleen credits her social justice values to her Grenadian immigrant parents, her multicultural neighborhood, 90’s hip hop, and love of history. 

 


Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.

James Beard Foundation events permit guests age 21 years and older to attend events where alcoholic beverages are served.

Reservation Policy:

All reservations are non-refundable and must be made in advance. Should the event be cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances, including COVID-19, JBF will offer a range of options, including ticket exchanges, the option to donate tickets, or a full refund.
