Kids Cooking Class led by Google and Green Bronx Machine

Kids ages 6-12 are invited to this educational and creative class on regrowing food led by Google’s Executive Culinary Instructor Marian LaRaia and Green Bronx Machine Founder Stephen Ritz. In this 90-minute hands-on class, students will use previously harvested vegetables and properly replant them for regrowth. Everyone will get their creative juices flowing when they personalize their own planter to transport their new plant back home. Kids will also mix up a plant-forward dip that they can easily recreate for their friends and family on their own.

About Marian LaRaia, Culinary Food Educator for RA @Google: Food Educator of Google New York’s KitchenSync, Marian LaRaia teaches the importance of fresh ingredients and the benefits of cooking with the seasons. A proponent of plant-forward diets, she connects students to where and how food is grown, gives tips on how to reduce food waste and repurpose leftovers, and how food impacts well-being, the environment, and communities.
About Stephen Ritz, Founder, Green Bronx Machine: Founder Stephen Ritz recognizes the power of plants to enrich students’ bodies and minds in a variety of ways. His organization, Green Bronx Machine, builds healthy, equitable, and resilient communities through inspired education, local food systems, and 21st-century workforce development.
With 20+ years of experience as an educator and administrator, Ritz has spent most of his professional life helping move generations of students into spheres of personal and academic successes they have never imagined. While reclaiming and rebuilding the Bronx, Ritz’s extended student and community family have grown more than 165,000 pounds of vegetables while generating extraordinary academic performance and living wage jobs. Ritz wakes up every day excited to teach students and build programs that will impact the lives of those he cares about for years to come. Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.
James Beard Foundation events permit guests age 21 years and older to attend events where alcoholic beverages are served.
