Just like chefs Shenarri Freeman and Mike Carter, pizza and bubbles are an iconic pairing. Both chefs have chosen culinary careers rooted in activism and holistic wellbeing. At her New York City restaurant Cadence, Shenarri’s plant-based food is an expression of her belief in the therapeutic and deep healing power of food. At Philadelphia’s Down North Pizza, executive chef Mike Carter is aligned with the restaurant’s mission of reducing recidivism by providing economic opportunities for the formerly incarcerated. For one special night, these chefs are joining forces to create a festive evening of vegan and non-vegan pizzas paired with bubbly wines curated by Highly Recommend NYC.

About Shenarri Freeman:
Chef Shenarri Freeman, aka “Shenarri Greens,” is the executive chef of Cadence, a plant-based restaurant with Southern soul in New York’s East Village. At Cadence, chef Shenarri, a 2022 and 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist, taps into her Virginia upbringing and vegan ethos, and spotlights Southern foodways through the lens of health and sustainability. Many of chef Shenarri’s signature dishes have roots in the foods she enjoyed at home with her family, all reimagined in plant-based form. The New York Times called Cadence one of the top 10 new New York restaurants of 2021 as well as one their top 50 favorites in America. Esquire named it to their top 40 in America. Shenarri has been written up in Vogue, New York Magazine, and more and is a member of the Forbes 30 under 30 class of 2023.
About Mike Carter:
Michael Carter, better known as “Mike”— or his nickname, “The Flavor Regulator”— is the executive chef at the mission-driven restaurant Down North Pizza in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Having spent a total of 12.5 years incarcerated (at various intervals) Carter is not only someone that benefits from Down North’s Pizza mission of reducing recidivism but is also a role model for everyone in the community. On top of serving up Philly’s best square pies and running the day-to-day operations at the restaurant, some of his latest achievements include: the successful 2020 Free Lunch Program (a Down North Pizza summer initiative to help feed local children), selling 10,000 handmade pies between March and July 2021, and spearheading a “A Match Made in Philly” a chef’s choice menu collaboration series alongside notable chefs Marc Vetri, Randy Rucker, and Chad Williams.
Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.
