Join us as we delve into the vibrant world of African cuisine with celebrated chef and author Alexander Smalls and acclaimed food writer and co-founder of Dine Diaspora, Nina Oduro. In a conversation moderated by journalist and co-host of CBS Saturday Morning Michelle Miller, they will discuss their collaborative work, The Contemporary African Kitchen, a groundbreaking cookbook that explores the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Africa while reinterpreting them for the modern palate. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a lively discussion with the authors about their experiences, recipes, and the broader context of African culinary traditions. Bites from the book will be served.

About Alexander Smalls:
Alexander Smalls is a James Beard Award–winning chef, author, and restaurateur. He was the co-owner of Harlem restaurants The Cecil and Minton’s, and the founder of the African food hall Alkebulan in Dubai, which showcases the food and culture of Africa. He is also a world-renowned opera singer and the winner of both a Grammy and Tony Award. His previous publications include Meals, Music & Muses, Between Harlem & Heaven, and Grace the Table. He lives in New York City.
About Nina Oduro:
Nina Oduro is an entrepreneur, writer, and inclusion strategist. As co-founder and CEO of Dine Diaspora, she connects people and brands to African diaspora food culture. Her accolades include recognition as a 2020 Change-maker in Washington, D.C.’s Food System by Washington City Paper, and an honoree in the Future of Ghana’s 30 under 30. She lives in Washington, D.C.
About Michelle Miller:
Michelle Miller is a co-host of "CBS Saturday Morning." Her work regularly appears on "CBS Mornings," "CBS Sunday Morning" and the "CBS Evening News." She also files reports for "48 Hours" and anchors CBS News Streaming’s “Eye On America.”
In addition to her co-hosting and reporting duties, Miller is a board member for the School of American Ballet and Education Africa and has served on the March of Dimes National Communications Advisory Council. She is a member of the Greater New York Chapter of the Links, Inc., Jack & Jill of America and is a founding member of the Women's Leadership Initiative for the United Way of New Orleans. Previously, Miller served as vice president of the YWCA of Greater New Orleans and president of both the Black Journalists Association of Southern California and the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists. She is also a former member of the Board of Advisors at Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism.
She is also the author of the New York Times Best Seller “Belonging: A Daughter's Search for Identity Through Loss and Love,” a memoir which details Miller's deeply personal journey of confronting her past and finding her voice.
Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.
