April 9, 6:00 P.M. Demo and Dine: Ethiopian Jewish Cuisine with Beejhy Barhany

April 09, 2025 06:00 PM

A Cooking Demo and Tasting with the Author of Gursha

25 11th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA

Born in Ethiopia, Beejhy Barhany is the founding owner and chef of Tsion Cafe in Harlem, New York City, where she has been able to share the food of her Ethiopian-Jewish culture with her neighbors in Harlem. Long before settling in New York, Beejhy, her family, and her community left Ethiopia to fulfill the prophecy of returning to the promised land of Zion. After years in Sudan, they finally arrived in Israel where Beejhy lived and worked on a kibbutz. Her incredible story is chronicled in her debut cookbook, Gursha, which loosely translates as “the act of feeding one another.”

Passover, a holiday that commemorates the exodus of the enslaved Jews from Egypt to Israel, is especially meaningful for Beejhy. Her table always includes Beg Wot, an aromatic lamb stew that represents the Paschal Lamb in the story of Passover. Join Beejhy for a cooking demonstration, talk, and tasting that celebrates her Passover traditions and illustrates her journey from Ethiopia to Israel to Harlem.

Copies of Gursha: Timeless Recipes for Modern Kitchens, from Ethiopia, Israel, Harlem, and Beyond by Beejhy Barhany with Elisa Ung are available for purchase with tickets and at the event from our friends at Kitchen Arts & Letters.

General Admission: $95 | $125 with a copy of Gursha
